Life as women's in WW1

W.A.L.T describe what life was like for men and women in WW1 through a diary entry.

23rd September 1918

It’s a another day without my brother Jack.  It's been long since I have even seen Jack. I miss him and I hope he’s ok.  I was hoping not to get a tallygram but I got one to say he's in the hospital.  Mum was  worried too, but she asked me to stay and help out at the farm so I did.  It is really hard collecting the food for me and mum.  Especially without  my dad, because he's on tour for work.  So it’s just the girls. I have been cleaning,  washing the dishes and cleaning clothes. Cleaning clothes was a big one because mum had not done it in ages, luckily I did it.  As we were collecting food in the garden there was flies eating all the rotten food but we still got some good ones like apples, potatoes and beans I can’t really think what else I have been doing.

I have been helping other people at their homes.  I had to go to my friend Emily's house, her brother Zac went to war too and had sadly got shot going over the top.  When I went over to her house again, she was balling her eyes out but I helped her to get over it.
